What are the neighborhoods like in Chicago?

Hi. I am thinking of moving to Chicago and eventually transfer to Loyola U Chicago. I was just wondering what the different neighborhoods were like. I have some friends who live in Wicker Park….and I know that Lincoln Park is kind of “hipsterish.” And that’s fine…but are there any funky neighborhoods? Maybe a little more “bohemian.” Is Lincoln Park all about the hipsters? or is that just a rumor? I just am not big into the bar/club scene….what’s Logan Square/Bucktown like? Hmm…I guess I just want information on the neighborhoods in Chicago.

What is the folk/blues music scene like in Chicago? And besides bars/clubs how else do young people (early 20s) meet people (I’m guessing at school).

Thanks!…sorry to be vague. ha, I’m really looking forward to get a clearer picture of Chicago. (I lived there from ages 1-10, so I have a limited memory of the place). Any other tidbits on Chicago would also be greatly appreciated!

Well, first off Lincoln Park isn’t “hipsterish”, Lincoln park is Yuppish. Wicker Park is “hipsterish” although that is changing rapidly. I see more Dockers-wearing guys there now than I did 7 years ago.

“Funky” neighborhoods would be, I guess, Wicker Park/Bucktown, Logan Square, Ukranian Village, Pilsen, parts of Uptown, Edgwater, Andersonville. Rogers Park is kinda “bohmeian”.. lots of former hippies but the neighborhood is undergoing a bit of a transition now. when they tore down a lot of the CHA units, a lot ofthose residents moved there and now there is a bit of gang activity, unruly kids running the streets, etc. But the old-timers are trying to stand firm and work with everyone to get along. I still like it, live not too far away and go there frequently to pick up my orders of organic veggies from the local co-op.

Blues, of course, is big here and folks is thriving quite well. Places like Schubas, The Hideout and the Old Town School of Folk Music (naturally) feature folk/countryish concerts and bands.

Younger people meet at coffee shops, concerts in small clubs, literary events (there are poetry venues, writers groups, etc.) and believe it or not, at comedy clubs. There are a bunch of new comedy clubs popping up and for some reason, stand up is becoming big.

Anyway, that’s all I can think of. If you need any more info, ask.
