Why does my T-Mobile service get cut off randomly?

I live in San Lorenzo, CA (94580). This town is very near Oakland. T-Mobile offers good coverage all over my area, according to their website. Yet for some reason, for the past 3 hours, coverage has been cut off. All I get is “call failed”. It did the same thing yesterday, too. I was on the freeway, driving through Oakland, and in the middle of the day on a major freeway, no coverage! Today, I went to the park with my little girl, and as we left the house, I had 4/5 bars, as I walk to the next block, I got 0/5 bars, suddenly no reception! Why?

The phone and battery themselves seem fine.

Other times I can make calls, other times I cannot, very frustrating.

I’m using a prepaid T-Mobile SIM card on an unlocked Motorola V600 phone.

I can’t comment on any sort of local situation that may be going on in your area since I am currently on the other side of the country in NYC, but hopefully I can shed some light on possible causes for your issue.

One possibility is that there is some sort of issues going on with the network such as maintenance or perhaps upgrades which bring certain towers down for a short length of time. If this was the case then the loss of service would’ve been noticed by everybody around you in that area at that time.

Another possibility is that your handset has some damage. It could be a loose connection between your antenna and the phone itself that makes the signal go in and out. It is also possible that your phone is running out of spec.

If a GSM (the network technology that T-Mobile uses) handset is not transmitting correctly (too powerful, too weak, off timing, etc.) then the network will automatically disconnect the phone to prevent degrading other user’s signal.

If you were in the NYC area I’d ask you to stop by so that we could run an RF test on your handset to see if it is operating within specifications. Unfortunately I don’t know of any locations in the California area that perform this service, but it may be worthwhile to look into it.

I hope that helps.
