Suggestions for places to stop on a cross-country trip?
My bestfriend are going to be traveling across the country this summer( and then back with my family) from Portland, Oregon to Tampa, Florida area. We are looking for cool places to stop along the way and the best HWYs and such to take. We interesting in finding some cool karaoke bars, places to shop, picture ops as wells as pretty much anything else. We’ve got a nice chunk of time allotted for the trip down so we want to find some cool things to do. Any suggestions would be awesome.
I envy you!
I live in CT. I’ve been to all 50 states, 48 by car. Been cross-country several times. I’ve seen everything along the way, yet always find new things to see.
Here’s my best advice: since you still have time, go on line and locate the tourist websites of all the states you’ll be passing through. Request that they send you their vacation guide. It’ll be chock full of so many fun things to see and do you’ll wish you had more time to spend in each one of them.
Get a Road Atlas of the USA (or if you’re an AAA member, get FREE maps and travel guides) and plot out your trip. Decide where you want to stay and for how long.
Look for lodgings OUTSIDE of town. They’ll be a lot cheaper and the cost of gas and time to drive to fun places is a lot less than the cost of a hotel in town (trust me, I know!). I try to locate a hotel on the outside of down in the direction I’m headed outbound towards the next city, so I don’t have to fight morning traffic to get to my next destination.
Check out this route:
I-84 east to Salt Lake City (via Boise)
I-80 east to Omaha (via Cheyenne)
I-29 south to Kansas City (great BBQ everywhere)
I-70 east to St. Louis. Go up the arch!
I-64 to Mt Vernon, then I-57 to I-24 to and through Nashville
I-24 continues to Chattanooga (yes, Virginia, there IS a choo-choo) and on to I-75 to Tampa.
Coming back, foolow I-75 North to I-10 west, all the way to California, then I-5 north back home.
