Chicago Open Jam Session…Nightclub Info?
A friend and I are visting Chicago Labor Day weekend and he’s bringing his bass guitar. We’re looking for clubs in the downtown area that have open jam sessions. Also looking for mature, dress code enforced, nightclubs that play reggae, old school and/or hip hop music. Thanks for your help!
Forget downtown. There are not really any open jam band clubs there. In fact most of the bars there shutdown early evening and on the weekends since they mostly cater to the commuter/office crowd and since they go home afterwork and don’t come down on the weekends, they have no business.
for open mike band stuff you have to venture to other place. The bar Weeds (1555 N. Dayton) has open mike night on the weekends. not sure which night but you can give them a call. There’s another bar called the Red Line Tap far north in Rogers Park that has an open mike on Thursdays.
This website has a listing for open mike nights across the country, including Chicago. You have to scroll down a bit (http://www.faqs.org/faqs/music/jam-sessions/). I’d give these places a call just to make sure. A few of them look outdated.
As for reggae bars, there are basically two: The Wild Hare and Exedus. both are located on North Clark Street right next to Wrigley Field. They don’t have any dress code so you’re pretty sure to see some Cub fan with a backwards basebal cap and an Old Style in his hand. Most other bars play old school or hip hop or different nights. You could check out the Funky Buddah Lounge on Grand Av. near Halsted. They specialize in hip-hop, trip-hop with a touch of house. Pick up a copy of Time Out Chicago magazine from a book store when you get here. They have a great listing of bars and the type of music they play for that particular week.
