jazz bars york region
I’m going on a trip to New York this Saturday. Can anybody give me advice?

1. I’m taking my car. I’ll be in the Times Square region. How bad of an idea is it to drive in Manhattan? I heard traffic is horrible. And I’m not an aggressive driver. Also, what are the best times to avoid REALLY bad traffic.

2. I’ll be mostly in Times Square. Safe at night? On a Saturday?

3. I take A LOT of pictures. I want to only explore the Times Square region. Any places you can recommend for a tourist to get good shots?

4. At the end of the night I want to mellow down. Any great jazz bars that aren’t too expensive?

Thanks in advance.

1. Just reading the part about not being an aggressive driver…DON’T DRIVE ANYWHERE IN MANHATTAN. You really have to have your “wits” on you and if you are not used to drivers cutting you off out of nowhere, cabbies zooming across lanes to pick up a fare, then don’t do it. ESPECIALLY in Times Square. And honestly, you could drive it at night, but certain areas get jammed up due to overnight construction. It’s really a “no win” per se.

2. Times Square today is NOT the Times Square of the 80′s and early 90′s. To that, it is TOTALLY safe at night! Cops are all over the place and with the high amount of tourists there, you should have no problems.

3. Anywhere within Times Square is fine but on the opposite “triangle” (around 48th Street where Broadway and 7th Avenue intersect), that is the “classic” Times Square picture of all the lights. One word of advice, stand clear of pedestrian traffic when taking a picture (towards the curb). New Yorkers want to go to where they have to go and don’t want to be stopped because a tourist stops in the middle of the sidewalk to take a picture.

4. BB King’s (8th & 42nd) is perfect for jazz and blues. Iridium Jazz Club (1650 Broadway by 51st Street) is another good venue as well.
