When can you feed an infant citrus and berries?

i was just reading somewhere that babies can’t have citrus foods or berries, i believe due to allergy risks…however, many of the stage 2 earth’s best foods i have been giving to my almost 7 month old have raspberries and strawberries, and he loves sucking on edy’s fruit bars lime popscicles (not the whole thing, he just likes a few tastes when i have one). he also loves sucking on lemons. he has never had a bad reaction to any foods so far. if it’s true they shouldn’t have these things, why are they in stage 2 foods?

SO with citrus, the problem is not allergies but acidity that can easily upset a baby’s tummy and/or cause face and bottom rashes. Therefore, a _little_ bit of citrus is usually ok at a younger age because the acidity gets absorbed by other food they eat. So something like a few bites of lime popsicle probably won’t affect your baby; neither will something like giving them guacamole with a little lemon in it, stuff like that. For just eating an orange, though, they recommend 10-12 months (pick the later time if your baby has gotten rashes from other acidic foods like tomatoes). However, if your baby is currently sucking on a lemon and not getting any rashes/tummy upsets, then obviously he is ok with that and you don’t need to worry about it.

With raspberries and strawberries, however, the issue is that they are a common allergn. For that reason, you should wait until on these foods until after a year. They do appear in baby food because the manufactuers say that the high processing temperatures kind of “kill” the proteins that cause the problem. (cooking at home can also help reduce teh allergen proteins, but the temps don’t get high enough to get rid of all of them). Some people choose to be cautious and even avoid the jarred food with berries until after a year. Its worth mentioning that blueberries and cranberries are not related to strawberries/raspberries, and are ok for babies starting at around 6-8 months.
