Why are the British generally loud and rowdy in our hotel?

I work at Best Western in downtown Vancouver. We get tourists from every corner of the world, especially now that the winter Olympics are here. Generally, our guests are well-behaved, clean and decent, considering there are so many bars and nightclubs around our hotel. What we (staff) have noticed is that the British (not always, but it’s the reputation here) go out, get drunk, and then come back behaving like idiots…they get loud, rowdy and intoxicated without any consideration for others. We knew we would face this problem in the winter olympics, so we screened out the young British tourists from our pre-reservation list. Is ‘control’ something not taught to the British youth?

I’d understand if this were Cancun or some vacation resort, but it’s not – this is Vancouver! And – there are other tourists staying with us as well, both young and old, who don’t behave like complete idiots and know what they’re doing when they’re drunk.

Hello,

Some people like to have a wild time and call attention to themselves:

1) I’m sure there are thousands of nice quiet British tourists but of course they are the ones you will not hear.

2) Didn’t Vancouverite Canadians have some awful disturbance much like the terrific punch ups and property damage done between the former Mods and Rockers in Brighton about 5 years back after a hockey game?

3) That said, I have heard similar complaints about Americans, Aussies, Germans throughout the world. When being chucked out of Hotels or bars, some Canadians are smart enough to yell on their way out that we Americans don’t take s*it from no one!

Cheers,

Michael Kelly
