Where should I travel around Australia.. And WHY?
I’m currently living in Gold Coast, Australia until July 1st becuase I’m studying abroad. I came here with the intention of traveling all over Australia and maybe Fiji and New Zealand.. but now i’m asking myself, what’s the point?? I’m going to Sydney in a couple weeks because i’ve always wanted to checkout the opera house, bondi beach, etc.. but besides that, I just don’t see the point. Here in Gold Coast, we have really nice beaches, so many great nightclubs, cool shopping, I’m never bored here. I LOVE THE GOLD COAST!! So anyway, why would I want to travel anywhere else? What could I find somewhere else in Australia that I can’t find right here in Gold Coast? For example, why should I visit Melbourne? Fiji? Newcastle?.. if you can think of a convincing reason i’ll probably go, I just want the motivation in my mind to know I’m traveling for another reason then to just check out another beach or another nightclub. Thanks!!!
Why should you see Australia?
Q1. When will you ever have this opportunity again?
Q2. Do you really want to say when you return home that all you saw of Australia was… the Gold Coast? You went no-where, saw nothing… just the Gold Coast.
Back in 1988 I didnt have the funds for an airfare to Western Australia to attend my sister’s wedding. I got a 15 day bus pass with Delux Coaches and went by bus from Brisbane, across the Nullabor Plain to Perth.
That section of the trip took 3 days travelling almost non-stop… Brisbane, Armidale, Dubbo, Cobar, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Norseman, Kalgoorlie, Coolgardie, Perth.
I spent 6 days in Perth then headed north… travelling for another 5 days almost non-stop.
Geraldton, Carnarvon, Karratha, Port Hedland, Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Kunnanurra, Katherine, Darwin, Katherine, Mataranka, Three ways, Camooweal, Mt Isa, Julia Creek, Townsville, McKay, Rockhampton, Brisbane.
I can honestly say I have been around Australia and seen a lot…
My only regret is that it was done in DAYS and not over many months. I don’t know if or when I will ever be able to go and see Australia properly…
Sure I have sailed the Australian coast from Hobart to the Whitsundays and part of the West Australian coast, but I havent been on the 8 day camel trek in the outback leaving from Alice Springs. I havent gone swimming with the whale sharks off Exmouth. I havent seen Ayers Rock. I stopped in at Katherine, but havent seen the Gorge.
I have the post cards of where I went, but I havent seen them for myself… I havent stood in awe looking over the Wolf Creek meteor crater out of Derby, havent gone out with the pearl divers off Broome or gone for a camel ride along Broome beach at sunset.
I havent gone out to Marble Bar which is Australia’s hottest place in summer. For that matter I havent seen Cooper Pedy either, where the opal mining town is underground to keep cool. I havent seen the lava tubes of north Queensland either…
I went near the Kimberley area, but didnt get to go see the area properly. It is one of Western Australia’s jewels. I didnt get to have a look at the Ord River or the Argyle Diamond Mine at Kunnanurra.
I didnt get to tour through the silver mine at Broken Hill or the gold mine at Kalgoorlie. I briefly stopped in at Lightning Ridge and bought an opal, but didn’t get to tour any of the opal mines.
I havent seen the volcanic lakes of Mt Gambier, but I have climbed Mt Kosciusko Australia’s tallest peak.
I’ve heard about the outback tracks crossing the deserts, but havent been on them. I’ve looked into doing the cattle droving trails but havent done that either… I can say I have done 6 days on horse back camping out through the Snowy Mtns visiting places from its historic gold rush days. I havent panned for gold yet.
I have spent holidays on sheep and cattle stations in outback QLD; 3 weeks 300km southwest of Longreach and one week at Winton. Spent 10 days on a tall ship in West Aus, have visited lighthouses in NSW, QLD, WA, and flown over the Great Barrier Reef’s length, but have only visited the southern tip of it.
I have been around Tasmania twice, (been there 3 times), but still havent seen the western coast convict settlement ruins or the town of Strahan or the eastern convict settlement of Port Arthur, or gone up the Franklin River, or crossed the mountain range from Cradle Mtn. Ive seen most of Victoria but still have so much to see… seen very little of South Australia.
I’m seeing a lot of the North Island of New Zealand while visiting different lighthouses here, have crossed Cook Straight on the inter-island ferry, but I havent seen the South Island or the volcanic cluster of craters out of Rotorua… there is still so much to see… I’ve lived close to the sleeping volcano Mt Egmont and have climbed it!
Why travel?
It expands your horizons… and if you’re lucky, you will be bitten by the travel bug and want to keep looking beyond the horizon…
I’ve sailed to New Caledonia in a ocean yacht race, and sailed through Vanuatu on volunteer medical work and saw so much of that beautiful nation. I’ve seen active volcanoes and experienced different cultures…
I regret not having the funds to travel down to the Illes des Pins (Isle of Pines) when in New Caledonia and wish I got to see Urrapurrapura Island and climb to the volcanic lake on Gowa Island when in Vanuatu… I still wish I got to climb Mt Wilhelm in PNG as a kid and cross the equator when I lived so close to both… they are in the “to do” basket still.
These are the experiences that enrich your life…
If this isnt reason enough to go see what is around you, when the oportunity is there, then it will ever be a missed opportunity…
Q 3. Are you going to regret that?
You will Never Never know it you never never go… a Northern Territory quote.
good luck and go travel!
