Little Rock, Arkansas?

In the past months, Little Rock is booming with population growth and more diversity. Addition to downtown, new high rise buildings such as the upcoming 20th story River Market Tower/River Market Place located in downtown in which it puts alot of impact to the skyline. The growth of the entertainment bustling River Market Distict such as clubs, bars and restaurants. New nice condos, new shopping malls and centers in the western side of town, and numerous of concert and sight seeing venues. Little Rock is seeing to be the next new America’s destination. It feels like a mixture of country and urban vibe in which I love. If anyone has went to Little Rock in the past months, what do you think about it? Do you think that Little Rock is a nice city to relax and to be on tour for new site seeing areas? Do you think Little Rock has alot of potiential to keep growing to compete with other big cities? Let me hear your comments, opinions, and expressions about Little Rock and Arkansas.

Good Morning,
Take it from someone who lives in Little Rock, if you have the money Little Rock can be a nice little place to live, but there is still poverty and want here. I live on the towns southwest side and it is currently being over run by Hispanics and is looking more like a Mexican barrio than a town in the southern part of the country. For a city that is very policed, ie Little Rock Police Department, Pulaski County Sheriffs Department, Arkansas State Police, Arkansas Highway Police, the F.B.I, Secret Service, and other law enforcement offices here crime rates are still high per capita of population. There are still places here you just don’t go down at night, especially on the towns east side, down the Wright Avenue corridor, and others. Back in 2006 we had one of highest murder rates of any city of its size in the country.

This past year Little Rock lost its minor league baseball team, the Arkansas Travelers to North Little Rock, they built a 20 million dollar ball park just north of the river and now Ray Winder is nothing but a ghost town and falling down from neglect. The only growth per say that I’ve seen since I moved here over 14 years ago is on the city’s west side, more construction permits have been issued for that side of town than any part of town, that is where the affluent and well do to have their homes. We lost two malls since I moved here, Southwest Mall which is now the headquarters for the state police, and University Mall which will be the future headquarters for a bunch of state agencies. There is still bigotry and discrimination especially if you are white, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, the reason why I know this is because it has happened to me at my job on numerous occasions. The city ripped off a whole lot of property owners next to the Arkansas River so they could build the Clinton Library, it looks more like a double wide trailer on stilts. You mentioned something about the River Market District downtown, yes it looks ok but it was poorly conceived and does not fit the size of the region it was designed to serve. Public transportation is another issue in this town, it doesn’t run 24-7 and doesn’t serve some of the outlying areas of town and some of the outlying areas it does serve there is only two trips per day one in the morning and one at night. and forget going north of the river on a bus at night you won’t get back to the south side unless you get a cab.

Now lets talk about the streets especially on the city’s southwest side. There are streets that haven’t been touched in over twenty years and you can barely put two cars side by side without going into the ditch. I lived on Rinke Road and in certain sections this street was no more that eight feet wide, and Community Street is the same way. Yes they have invested heavily on the city’s west side but southwest, parts of the central city, and the city’s east side still look as it did over twenty years ago.

Politically it is filled with tax friendly politicians that have it in their minds to tax you for everything you buy, earn, and sell.

In the end if you want to relax and enjoy the sights go right on ahead there are those who have paid dearly for your beautiful sights.
