Any good “nightlife” suggestions for Chicago?

Take into consideration I:
-don’t like Jazz or Piano Bars
-am not a gay male
-not really into “trance”/techno (it’s just ok.)

I would like to find a nice bar that plays a lot of good rock/mainstream rap/hip-hop…fun music to dance to. Also, some place that is not a dive. Preferable Loop area. I have had no luck finding anything like this. Please help! :) Thanks in advance!
okay. well i am going to be in town for Lollapalooza and I was hoping to find a place to hit after the show are done. I had considered HoB but they aren’t open very late…and I don’t exactly want to go see another live show. I did try the yellow pages but the results that came up weren’t places that really matched my search, so I thought I would ask real people.

Do you need a liquor license to sell wine in Albuquerque New Mexico?

I’m interested in opening a wine bar and didn’t know how to get these answers without heading downtown…yahoo makes it easy :-)

Yes, a liquor license is a necessity. In New Mexico it is particularly expensive because there are a set number of licenses and you need to find someone to sell you one. The good news is that beer/wine licenses are easier to fing than full bar licenses. You will have to find a broker for the most efficient path to wine bar ownership.

Most licenses cost in excess of $300,000.

Your other option is to lease a fallow license. Again, finding a broker is probably the best way to go on this.

Good luck!

Tesla Motors

Corporate strategy

Tesla’s primary goal is to increase the number and variety of EVs available to mainstream consumers in three ways: Tesla sells its own vehicles in a growing number of company-owned showrooms and online; it sells patented electric powertrain components to other automakers so that they may get their own EVs to customers sooner; and it serves as a catalyst and positive example to other automakers, demonstrating that there is pent-up consumer demand for vehicles that are both fun to drive and socially responsible. General Motors’ then-Vice Chairman Robert Lutz said in 2007 that the Tesla Roadster inspired him to push GM to develop the Chevrolet Volt, a hybrid sedan prototype that aims to reverse years of dwindling market share and massive financial losses for America’s largest automaker. In an August 2009 edition of The New Yorker, Lutz was quoted as saying, “All the geniuses here at General Motors kept saying lithium-ion technology is 10 years away, and Toyota agreed with us — and boom, along comes Tesla. So I said, ‘How come some tiny little California startup, run by guys who know nothing about the car business, can do this, and we can’t?’ That was the crowbar that helped break up the log jam.”

The Tesla Roadster has a base price of US$109,000, prompting criticism in the media that the company is catering exclusively to affluent consumers. Tesla’s goal is to sell EVs to mainstream consumers at more affordable pricesut Tesla purposely aimed its first production vehicle at “early adopters” so that the company could optimize the technology before cascading it down to less expensive vehicles. (The company’s subsequent car, the Model S sedan, is anticipated to begin production for the 2012 model year with a base price of $57,400, roughly half that of the Roadster.) This approach is a well known business strategy in Silicon Valley and the global technology industry, where prices for cellular phones, laptop computers and flat-screen televisions drop dramatically every product cycle. However, this approach has been rare in the global auto industry, where the prevailing business model has been one of mass production in assembly plants optimized to build hundreds of thousands of vehicles per year with comparatively low sticker prices. According to a blog post by Tesla CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk, “New technology in any field takes a few versions to optimize before reaching the mass market and in this case it is competing with 150 years and trillions of dollars spent on gasoline cars.”

History and financing

Corporate headquarters in San Carlos, CA

Tesla Motors was incorporated in Delaware on July 1, 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning to pursue mass production of AC Propulsion’s tzero prototype electric car. With a small amount of personal funding, they rented Tesla’s first office in Menlo Park, California and set about developing a business plan. They quickly added Ian Wright to the team and in January 2004 started looking for funding to develop an production electric sports car. They arranged with AC Propulsion to borrow their TZero prototype to demonstrate to potential investors the performance possible with an electric car. By April, they found a lead investor in Elon Musk and closed a Series A capital investment round of USD$7.5 million. The round included Compass Technology Partners and SDL Ventures, as well as many private investors. Musk, a South African-born entrepreneur, became Tesla’s Chairman of the Board. Musk later led Tesla Motors’ Series B, USD$13 million, investment round which added Valor Equity Partners to the funding team. Musk co-led the third, USD$40 million round in May 2006 along with Technology Partners. Tesla’s third round included investment from prominent entrepreneurs including Google co-founders Sergey Brin & Larry Page, former eBay President Jeff Skoll, Hyatt heir Nick Pritzker and added the VC firms Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Capricorn Management and The Bay Area Equity Fund managed by JPMorgan Chase. The fourth round in May 2007 added another USD$45 million and brought the total investments to over USD$105 million through private financing.

In August 2007, Martin Eberhard was replaced by an interim CEO, Michael Marks. In December 2007, Ze’ev Drori became the permanent CEO and President of Tesla Motors. In January 2008, Tesla Motors fired several key personnel who had been involved from the inception after a performance review by the new CEO. According to Musk, Tesla was forced to reduce the company workforce by about 10 percent to lower its burn rate, which was out of control in 2007.

The fifth round in February 2008 added another USD$40 million. Musk, who was President of PayPal before it was bought by eBay, had contributed $70 million of his own money to the company by this time.

In October 2008, Musk succeeded Ze’ev Drori as CEO. Drori became Vice Chairman. He left the company in December.

By January 2009, Tesla had raised USD$187 million and delivered 147 cars.

On May 19, 2009, Germany’s Daimler AG, maker of Mercedes, acquired an equity stake of less than 10 percent of Tesla for a reported $50 million. The investment deepened the relationship between the inventor of the automobile and the newest member of the global auto industry. As part of the collaboration, Prof. Herbert Kohler, Vice President E-Drive and Future Mobility at Daimler AG, took a seat on Tesla board of directors. In July, Daimler announced that Abu Dhabi’s Aabar Investments bought 40 percent of Daimler’s interest in Tesla.

In June 2009 Tesla was approved to receive $465 million in interest-bearing loans from the United States Department of Energy. The funding, part of an $8 billion program for advanced vehicle technologies (Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program), supports engineering and production of the Model S sedan, as well as the development of powertrain technology that Tesla plans to sell to other automakers. The low-interest loans are not related to the “bailout” funds that GM and Chrysler have received, nor are they related to the 2009 economic stimulus package. The Department of Energy loan program was created in 2007 during the George Bush administration in order to get more fuel-efficient vehicle options to U.S. consumers and to decrease the country’s dependence on foreign oil.

The company announced in early August 2009 that it had achieved overall corporate profitability for the month of July 2009. The company said it earned approximately $1 million on revenue of $20 million. Profitability arose primarily from improved gross margin on the 2010 Roadster, the second iteration of Tesla award-winning sports car. Tesla, which like all automakers records revenue when products are delivered, shipped a record 109 vehicles in July and reported a surge in new Roadster purchases.

In September 2009, Tesla announced an $82.5 million round to accelerate Tesla’s retail expansion in advance of the Model S. Daimler participated in the round to maintain equity ownership from its initial investment. A new investor was Fjord Capital Partners, under the leadership of founders Michael Obermayer (a former senior partner and director of McKinsey & Company, Inc), Arild Nerdrum and Xavier de La Rochefoucauld. Fjord is a specialized European private equity manager investing into the clean energy sector globally. Fjord invests growth capital in renewable and low-carbon companies and projects.

On 29 January 2010, Tesla Motors filed Form S-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, as a preliminary prospectus indicating its intention to file an initial public offering underwritten by Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, J. P. Morgan and Deutsche Bank Securities.

Tesla Roadster

Tesla Motors’ first production vehicle, the Tesla Roadster, is an all-electric sports car. Tesla announced in January 2010 that it had produced its 1,000th Roadster and had delivered cars in 43 states and 21 countries. According to test results from an EPA certified laboratory, the car has a range of 244 miles (393 km) per charge (using a standard EPA cycle of 45 percent highway driving and 55 percent city driving). Tesla acknowledges that if the car is driven extremely fast in typical racecar “performance testing,” efficiency is not optimized and the car, like its internal-combustion engine predecessors, will not achieve 244 miles per charge — and conversely if driven more moderately it can achieve significantly more range than 244 miles per charge. On Oct. 27, 2009, the Roadster set a new world record when customer Simon Hackett drove the entire 313-mile segment of Australia’s annual Global Green Challenge on a single charge. The company and reviewers state that the Tesla Roadster accelerates from zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) in under four seconds and has a top speed of 125 mph (201 km/h) (limited for safety). The cost of powering the vehicle is estimated at US$0.02 per mile. The base price of the car is US$109,000, and it qualifies for numerous state tax waivers, as well as the $7,500 federal tax credit.

Prototypes were introduced to the public in July 2006, and the Tesla Roadster was featured on the cover of Time in December 2006 as the recipient of the magazine’s “Best Inventions 2006ransportation Invention” award. Demand was high for the first “Signature One Hundred” set of fully equipped Roadsters, which sold out in less than three weeks, and the second hundred sold out by October 2007. The first production model was delivered to Elon Musk, then-Chairman of the Board, in February 2008, and general production began on March 17, 2008.

In July 2009, Tesla began production of its 2010 model-year Roadster — the first major product upgrade since Tesla began production in 2008. Changes to the 2010 model-year vehicle include:

An upgraded interior and push-button gear selector, including xecutive interior of exposed carbon fiber and premium leather, and clear-coat carbon fiber body accents.

Locking, push-button glove box wrapped in leather.

A centrally mounted video display screen to monitor real-time data, including estimated range, power regenerated, and the number of barrels of oil saved. This convenient screen is visible to the driver and passenger.

Adjustable, custom-tuned suspension with the option of sport and comfort settings.

More powerful and immediate heating, ventilation and air-conditioning.

More efficient motor and hand-wound stator. The new motor generates more kilowatts per amp in other words, more power — than the predecessor.

A suite of sound-deadening measures to dramatically reduce noise, vibration and harshness. For instance, engineers added pellets to a member of the chassis side rail. These pellets expand by 5,000 percent during the adhesive heating cycle to eliminate rattles.

Because the Roadster is fully electric, there is no engine cranking sound, so the driver is greeted with a chime. The dashboard, besides displaying RPM and speed, also indicates how many amps are being used instantaneously. There is also a special battery control screen to the left indicating state of charge that is also lit when the car was charging. The Roadster will also be one of almost 1,000 cars featured in the upcoming PlayStation 3 racing simulation game, Gran Turismo 5.

In January 2010, Tesla began producing its first right-hand-drive Roadsters for the UK and Ireland. The 2010 model-year right-hand-drive Roadster includes a suite of unique noise-reduction materials and an upgraded sound system. The Roadster starts at 86,950 and costs about 1.5p per mile, compared to as much as 32p per mile for petrol-powered sports cars, based on current UK petrol prices including VAT. Roadster drivers do not have to pay the London congestion charge, saving up to nearly 1,700 annually. They can park for free and without time limits in various London boroughs, they get four hours of free charging at certain parking sites, and they are exempt from the forthcoming Showroom Tax of 950.

Tesla Roadster Sport

Main article: Tesla Roadster

Tesla began taking orders in January 2009 for the Roadster Sport, a higher performance sports car based on the Roadster.

Tesla says the Roadster Sport accelerates from 060 mph (97 km/h) in 3.7 seconds, compared with 3.9 seconds for the standard Roadster. The Roadster Sport price starts at $128,500 in the United States and 112,000 (excluding VAT) in Europe. Deliveries began in July 2009. The Roadster Sport is the first derivative of Tesla proprietary, patented powertrain.

The Sport has been critically acclaimed by some of the leading US car critics including Engineering Editor Kim Reynolds of MotorTrend, whose magazine was the first to independently confirm the Roadster Sport’s reported 0-60 mph time of 3.70 seconds. (MotorTrend recorded 0-60 mph of 3.70 seconds; it recorded a quarter-mile test at 12.6 sec @ 102.6 mph.) Reynolds called the acceleration “breathtaking” and said the car confirms “Tesla as an actual car company. …Tesla is the first maker to crack the EV legitimacy barrier in a century.”

According to Tesla’s in-store marketing materials and third-party media reports, the Sport has:

Special firmware that wrings more torque out of the motor, particularly from 20-50 mph

Adjustable suspension that can be tuned to the driver preference, including a sport or a comfort setting.

Distinct Sport badging on the interior and exterior of the car, including special insignia on the leather seats.

Lightweight, forged black wheels.

Yokohama Ultra High Performance tires.

Scotty Pollacheck, a high-performance driver for Killacycle, drove a 2010 Tesla Roadster Sport at the Wayland Invitational Drag Race in Portland, Ore., in July 2009. He did a quarter-mile (~400 m) in dry conditions in 12.643 seconds, setting a new record in the National Electric Drag Racing Association among the SP/A3 class of vehicles. The Roadster Sport is increasingly popular on the drag-racing circuit, according to an August 2009 article in Wired Magazine and a number of YouTube clips.

Model S

Main article: Tesla Model S

Tesla Model S

Tesla has built a driving prototype and is working on production engineering of the Model S sedan, originally code-named “Whitestar,” which the company plans to begin producing in late 2011. Tesla plans to build an assembly plant in California to build the Model S. Tesla has already taken more than 1,500 reservations for the Model S.

It is being designed as an alternative to cars such as the BMW 5 Series and the Audi A6, with an anticipated base price of US$57,400 (or US$49,900 after the federal tax rebate). If one considers the lower cost of electricity vs. gasoline, as well as the lack of routine oil changes and other maintenance, Tesla says the cost of the Model S is similar to internal combustion engine vehicles with a sticker price of roughly $35,000. Tesla is planning on having three options for battery packs, allowing customers to select from 160 mi (260 km), 230 mi (370 km) or 300 mi (480 km) per charge before it must be recharged using a conventional 120 volt, 240 volt or some 480 volt outlets.

On March 26, 2009, Tesla unveiled the Model S design to the public by introducing a concept version of the car in the Tesla Design Studio in Hawthorne, Calif. This car included a touch-screen dashboard with wireless Internet access and remote-programming abilities. It seats five adults (plus two children in rear-facing child seats) and has a 060 mph (97 km/h) time of 5.5 seconds. The Model S was featured on Late Show with David Letterman in April 2009. Because the car uses no gasoline whatsoever and does not produce any tailpipe emissions, it was allowed on the Late Show set and was the first fully functioning car on the stage.

Smart city car

In late 2007, Tesla began working with Germany’s Daimler AG on powertrain components for an electric version of the German company’s Smart two-seater city car. Tesla is producing the battery packs and chargers for an initial 1,000-unit fleet of EV Smarts. Daimler has not released details about the vehicle’s pricing or timing. The two companies announced that they were working together on the Smart in January 2009.

Minivan, Crossover, Utility fleet van

Tesla Motors also announced in June 2009, along with their loans from the DOE, that they plan to build electric family-sized minivans, electric SUV crossovers, and electric fleet vans for municipal governments.

Facilities

Tesla Motors’ headquarters are located in San Carlos, California, where much of the development of the Tesla Roadster occurred.

United States

Tesla was founded in San Carlos, California, a city in the region known as Silicon Valley. Tesla opened its first retail store in West Los Angeles, Calif., in April 2008. The company opened its second retail store in Menlo Park, Calif., in July 2008. The company opened a display showroom in New York City’s Chelsea Art District in July 2009. It also opened a store in Seattle in July 2009. Tesla opened a store in Dania Beach, Florida in December 2009. It plans to open additional stores in Chicago and Washington DC.

Tesla announced in August 2009 that it planned to move its corporate headquarters and build a powertrain development facility at 3500 Deer Creek Road, in the Stanford Research Park in Palo Alto, Calif. Tesla said it would finance the project in part through $100 million of the federal low-interest loans. The facility, a 369,000-square-foot facility on a 23-acre parcel previously occupied by Agilent Technologies, will serve as Tesla’s consolidated corporate headquarters, with operations gradually shifting from its present quarters about 10 miles north in San Carlos. The powertrain facility will produce electric vehicle components for Tesla and for other automakers, including Germany’s Daimler, which is using Tesla’s battery packs and chargers for an upcoming electric version of its Smart city car. About 350 employees are expected to be based at the Stanford site initially, potentially increasing to 650. Stanford Research Park is also home to Facebook, Hewlett Packard, Xerox PARC and other Silicon Valley companies.

Using $365 million in federal low-interest loans, Tesla plans to build a Model S assembly plant in California with a fully ramped-up annual output of 20,000 sedans. Tesla has not announced a specific location, though unconfirmed media reports have focused on Southern California. In the summer of 2009, many speculative media reports suggested that Tesla could occupy the NUMMI assembly plant in Fremont, Calif., which General Motors and Toyota have signaled they plan to vacate. Tesla has said it will develop a brownfield site on existing industrial property preference of the federal government in approving candidates for interest-bearing loans from the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program.

Europe

Tesla’s European headquarters are in Windsor, UK. The Roadster’s chassis is currently being assembled by the contract manufacturing division of Lotus Cars in Hethel, England. The Roadster has a chassis with 100 percent unique dimensions, and the car is longer and wider and has lower door sills than than the Lotus Elise. The two cars have a parts overlap of less than 6 percent.

In June 2009, Tesla opened its first store in Europe showroom in central London’s Knightsbridge district. In September 2009, Tesla opened its first store in continental Europe showroom in downtown Munich. Tesla opened a store in Monaco in November 2009 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by CEO Elon Musk and car enthusiast Prince Albert II.

Regional sales and service centers

Tesla Motors dealership on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, California

Tesla has the following regional sales and service centers:

Menlo Park, California;

West Los Angeles, California;

Seattle, Washington;

Dania Beach, Florida;

Chicago, Illinois

London, UK;

Munich, Germany; and

Monaco.

Tesla opened the doors to its display showrooms at 511 W. 25th St. New York City’s Chelsea Art District in July 2009 and in Boulder, CO in October 2009. The company says it plans to open the following locations:

Washington DC

Toronto, Ontario

Marin County, California

San Diego, California

Milan, Italy

Paris, France

Copenhagen, Denmark

Tesla operates company-owned stores. Tesla showrooms include free Wi-Fi, beverages and snacks, coffee bars and couches. Prospective customers can test-drive cars with a salesperson. The company’s executives say they model showrooms after retailers such as Apple and Starbucks.

Tesla recommends that customers bring in their car for inspection and firmware updates every year or every 12,000 miles (19,000 km). Tesla operates mobile service squads for customers who do not live near the regional sales and service centers. There is minimal maintenance required of an electric vehicle. Because there is no internal combustion engine, there are no routine oil changes. Brake maintenance is minor due to regenerative braking. Transmission, brake, and cooling system fluid changes will be required roughly every five to seven years or as needed.

Partners

Tesla uses several domestic and overseas suppliers and partners. Although the Roadster is an American car according to its vehicle identification number, like virtually all production cars it uses parts from around the world.

Tesla’s carbon fiber body panels are made in France by French supplier Sotira. The panels are sent to England, where Tesla contracts with Lotus to build a unique chassis in Hethel, U.K. The cars are then sent to Menlo Park, California, where workers install all of the proprietary intellectual property of the car. The battery pack is assembled in San Carlos, California, using battery cells from Asia. The single-speed gearbox is built by Michigan-based supplier Borg Warner Inc.

When the company began in 2003, Tesla licensed AC Propulsion’s Reductive Charging(tm) patent, which integrates the charging electronics into the inverter in a way that reduces mass and complexity. Shortly after the company’s founding, Elon Musk convinced JB Straubel to join Tesla and ultimately lead development of the Tesla powertrain well beyond what the company initially licensed from AC Propulsion. The company no longer employs any of AC Propulsion’s original intellectual property.

Daimler

Starting in late 2007, Daimler and Tesla Motors began working closely to integrate Tesla lithium-ion battery packs and charging electronics into the first 1,000 units of Daimler electric smart car. The two companies are expected to collaborate further, including working together on the Tesla Model S sedan. The collaboration is not expected to result in co-branded cars or the sale of Mercedes vehicles in Tesla showrooms, or vice-versa.

On May 19, 2009, Germany’s Daimler AG, maker of Mercedes, acquired an equity stake of less than 10 percent in Tesla for a reported $50 million, according to unconfirmed media reports. The investment deepened the relationship between the inventor of the automobile and the newest member of the global auto industry. As part of the collaboration, Prof. Herbert Kohler, Vice President E-Drive and Future Mobility at Daimler AG, took a seat on Tesla board of directors.

On July 13, 2009, Daimler AG sold 40 percent of their May acquisition to Aabar Investments PJSC. Aabar is an investment company controlled by the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC), which is wholly owned by the Government of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. (In March 2009, Aabar purchased a 9 percent stake in Daimler for 1,95 billion EUR.)

Lawsuits

On April 14, 2008, Tesla Motors filed a lawsuit against Fisker Automotive, alleging that Henrik Fisker “stole design ideas and confidential information related to the design of hybrid and electric cars” and was using that information to develop the Fisker Karma, which was announced at the North American International Auto Show in January, 2008. Tesla had hired Fisker Coachbuild to design the WhiteStar sedan but decided against the design as it was considered “substandard” by Tesla chairman Elon Musk. On November 3, 2008, Fisker Automotive Inc. issued a press release indicating that an arbitrator has issued an interim award finding in favor of Fisker Automotive, Inc. and against Tesla Motors Inc. on all claims. Also in March 2008, Magna International filed a lawsuit against Tesla claiming that it was never paid for services rendered. Tesla hired Magna to help design a 2-speed transmission for its Roadster. The Magna-designed transmission is not in use for the current model.

The founding of the company and who can rightly be called “founder” was the subject of a lawsuit filed in May 2009 and later dropped after an out of court settlement. On May 26, 2009, Eberhard filed suit in San Mateo County, California against Tesla and Elon Musk (Chairman and CEO of Tesla) for slander, libel and breach of contract. Musk wrote a lengthy blog post that included original source documents, including e-mails between senior executives and other artifacts demonstrating that Eberhard was unanimously fired by Tesla’s full board of directors. On July 29, 2009, a judge in San Mateo County, Calif., Superior Court struck down a claim by former CEO Eberhard, who asked to be declared one of only two founders of the company. Tesla said in a statement that the ruling is “consistent with Tesla belief in a team of founders, including the company current CEO and Product Architect Elon Musk, and Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel, who were both fundamental to the creation of Tesla from inception.” In early August, Eberhard withdrew the case, and the parties reached a final settlement September 21. Some provisions are confidential, but the agreement includes a provision that the parties will consider Martin Eberhard, Elon Musk, JB Straubel, Marc Tarpenning, and Ian Wright to be the five co-founders.

Recall

In May 2009, Tesla issued a safety recall for 345 Roadsters manufactured before April 22, 2009. Tesla sent technicians to customers’ homes to tighten the rear, inner hub flange bolts. Using common verbiage from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, Tesla told customers that without this adjustment, the driver could lose control of the car. The problem originated at the Lotus assembly line, where the Roadster is built. Lotus also recalled some Lotus Elise and Exige vehicles for the same reason. Tesla reminded customers that millions of cars are recalled every year.

Straubel (“Straubel”), who later became Tesla’s Chief Technology Officer, learned of Musk’s interest in the development of an all-electric automobile. Following this conversation, he introduced Musk to Tom Gage and Al Ciccone at AC Propulsion, a company that had built an all-electric concept sports car call the Tzero. Musk was enthusiastic and encouraged Gage and Ciccone to put the Tzero concept into production. A Closer Look at Caribbean Cruise Itineraries

As our journey begins, we will be looking at some of the best places on all three points of the Caribbean. From the Lesser Antilles of the Eastern Caribbean to the vibrant, colorful, ancient Mayan ruins of Mexico touching the Western Caribbean to the fabulous duty free shopping of the Southern Caribbean, we will take a first hand look at what cruising to these spots has to offer vacationers.

We begin first with the Eastern Caribbean Cruise itinerary, both rich in culture and offer breathtaking scenery. The itinerary usually includes the Bahamas (located in the Atlantic Ocean) and islands of the Eastern Caribbean which include St Thomas, St. Maarten – St. Martin, Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. Most cruises to the Eastern Caribbean begin in Florida, with some departing out of Texas and sometimes when the Ship is repositioning, it will depart out of one of the North East ports.

Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas and is a hub of activity. With its colonial forts and interesting sites, Nassau’s downtown area is perfect for walking and offers some great shopping opportunities. Atlantis, a world-class resort is located in Nassau, and must be seen to be believed. Nassau is a must see on your trip to the Bahamas.

The scenery alone are worth the visit to the lush island of St. Thomas, USVI, not to mention the duty free shops and treasure –filled boutiques that are abundant for shopping aficionados. Some points of interest include Fort Christian, a US National Landmark and the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Island and Government house, which has been the center of government in St. Thomas since the mid 1860’s.

The cultural aspect of St. Maarten – St. Martin, split between a French side and a Dutch side, makes it unique. St. Maarten, the Dutch side, is lively with casinos and a bustling nightlife. This nightlife is known to be the most energetic in all the Caribbean. St. Martin, the French side, is more docile with very little nightlife, but it does have the opportunity to taste some terrific food. Beautiful beaches surround both sides of this wonderful island.

With its beautiful scenery and rich cultural heritage, it’s no wonder the Dominican Republic brings visitors back again and again. Christopher Columbus landed here during his exploration of the new world and declared it in the name of Spain – Santo Domingo, today, is home to some of the oldest buildings in the Western Hemisphere. Covered with spectacular white sandy beaches, and warm waters perfect for your water activities, Dominican Republic is one stop you won’t soon forget!

Some great cruise deals going on to the Eastern Caribbean are:
1. $379+: 7nt Bahamas Cruise Vacation Deal
2. $1079+: 8nt Caribbean Cruise on RCCL

Sailing mostly out of Florida and Texas, the Western Caribbean cruises invite you to experience such places as the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Key West, Florida. Each with its unique distinctions, these spots have a world to offer any traveler.

Cozumel, an island off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is a popular destination renowned for its snorkeling and scuba diving. This vibrant, colorful island is home to the ancient Mayan ruins and ultra-modern resorts. It also has some of the whitest powder sand and the clearest blue water you will ever see!

Although Jamaica has quite a few different spots to visit while on your Western Caribbean Cruise, make sure your itinerary includes Dunhill River Falls and/or Negril, Jamaica.

Ochio Rios, a city on the northern coast of Jamaica, has gained popularity among tourists as it is touted as being one of the safest areas for tourists in Jamaica. Two must sees when you go to Ochio Rios is the Dunn’s River Falls and Dolphin Cover, where visitors are able to swim and interact with dolphins.

Negril has been rated as one of the top ten beaches in the world by many travel magazines. South of downtown Negril is West End Road, known as the cliff area. This area offers good water for snorkeling and diving, and if you’re really daring, jumping points reaching more then 40 feet high. Rick’s Café is the place to watch the cliff jumpers. Consider one of the 1,000 places to go before you die, Rick’s Café not only entertains you with cliff jumpers, but has some of the best sunsets are some of the best in the world.

Another stop on your Western Caribbean cruise is Key West. Lying near the end of the chain of islands known as the Florida Keys, Key West is the southernmost city in the continental United States. Located north of Cuba and southwest of Miami, this laid back spot offers fun with its trolleys, great bars and music, and a plethora of water activities such as jet ski tours, kayak tours, and some of the best fishing anywhere in the world. If you are still around Key West during the early evening – don’t that you are in one of the most magnificent spots to view the sun set.

Take a closer look at some great deals to visit these and other islands in the Western Caribbean.
1. $499+: 7nt Western Caribbean Cruise
2. $599+: 7nt Western Caribbean Cruise – President’s Week

Finishing off the Caribbean cruise excursions is the Southern Caribbean.  Mainly departing from Puerto Rico, cruisers enjoy stops including Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, and Curacao.

Antigua is the absolute ‘beach-bum’ vacation destination.  Priding themselves on having a different beach for every day of the year, Antigua’s beaches are lined with soft white sand which attract people from all over the world who simply want to get away from it all.  Although Antigua’s British past is still evident with several forts dotting this island, people come here not for the history lesson, but rather to experience the crystal-clear waters and velvety sand.

More water adventures can be had in Aruba.  Part of the Netherlands Antilles, this island was virtually undiscovered by the tourist industry until a few years ago.  Miles and miles of white sandy beaches and desert-like landscape make up this piece of paradise.  Outside of the hurricane path, the island receives only a few inches of rainfall yearly making warm weather a given at any time of the year.  Palm trees swaying in the warm breeze and turquoise water lapping over a white sandy shore-line is music to anyone’s eyes.

Barbados, sometimes known as the “England of the tropics”, is famous for its miles of pink and white sand beaches – and who could argue with that?  Other then the clear water of the Caribbean Sea, Barbados is steeped with colonial history.  Buildings on the islands capital, Bridgetown, recall time of British rule.  A tad bit of history in Barbados, but the call of beautiful sandy beaches is what keeps people coming back to this magnificent island.

Along with Aruba and Bonaire, Curacao makes up the ABC Islands of the Lesser Antilles.  These are the only islands outside of the hurricane belt, so this would be the best itinerary to choose during hurricane season. Curacao is the perfect spot for those folks looking for warm water, an excellent nightlife and a unique cultural experience.  Willemstad, the capital of Curacao, is like visiting a small European city with all of the charm – and shopping.   These waters are great for snorkeling and scuba diving, particularly at the Curacao Underwater Park.  There are also several interesting sites inland such as the Hato Caves and the Curacao Seaquarium.  If the Southern Caribbean is your choice to cruise, give this island a close look.

You can view some great cruise deals to the Southern Caribbean here:
1. $449+: 7nt Southern Caribbean Cruise
2. $609+: 7nt Caribbean Cruise on RCCL

Of course, there is more to the Caribbean then the places above. A whole world of adventure and relaxation await you on any of the three points of the Caribbean. Enjoy your time exploring!

Chicago bars with gaming?

I have heard of Illinois has legalized video gambling machines in bars and restaurants and was wondering if anyone knew of a coast or near the gold loop domains.

They are not legal (as far as I know) but some small neighborhood bars, video poker machines as a waiter in a low voice if it hits earnings. We're talking very small bar and usually just an old machine. In general, it should be known at the bar or play on the computer for a while before you get any money. You can ask the waiter if your machine and you can afford or can not tell. I assure you there are no places in the Gold Coast or loop bars are too large or popular.

An Argentine Gem Hidden No More

EVERY August, the people of Jujuy pay tribute to the earth goddess Pachamama. Families prepare elaborate dishes — tamales, stews, llama or lamb — and then bury the food in a backyard or field, along with abundant hard liquor, coca leaves and even cigarettes. They believe that these offerings will satisfy the deity’s appetites and thus bring them good fortune and an abundant harvest. It’s an ancient Andean tradition that remains strong in this province in the northwestern corner of Argentina.

In a country likened more to Europe than the rest of Latin America, Jujuy stands apart.

Here, pagan rituals overshadow Catholic beliefs, medicine men are sometimes preferred to doctors, and everyone, regardless of ancestry, embraces an indigenous heritage that dates back to the 10th century.

“The culture of Jujuy has little to do with the rest of the country,” said Héctor Tizón, a renowned Argentine writer born in a small town near the province’s capital, San Salvador de Jujuy. “The culinary arts, the music, customs and architecture are autochthonous.”

But perhaps the most singular aspect of Jujuy is its dramatic landscape: more than 20,000 square miles of salt deserts, untamed jungles and an endless maze of multicolored rocky mountains rising up to 16,000 feet, threaded by a scenic ravine called Quebrada de Humahuaca — a onetime Inca trade route leading north to Bolivia, now a Unesco World Heritage site.

Until recently, Jujuy (pronounced hoo-HWEE) remained in relative obscurity, visited mostly by adventure travelers. With no major cities to speak of and few flights arriving at its modest international airport, anonymity wasn’t hard. But Argentina’s financial crisis in 2001 led many of its citizens to explore their own country, a cheaper alternative to flying abroad. It didn’t take long for sophisticated Porteños, as residents of Buenos Aires are called, to discover Jujuy. At the same time, the rising popularity of nearby Salta’s wineries started attracting worldly visitors to the region. The result has been an unexpected syncretism of cosmopolitan culture and age-old traditions, two very different worlds gradually embracing each other.

“Maybe this is one of the things we have the crisis to thank for,” Facundo Arana, an actor from Buenos Aires who was visiting Jujuy in May, said of the region’s breakthrough as a tourist destination. “Jujuy cannot be put into words; it seeps in through your eyes, your ears and your soul.”

Mr. Arana, a tall, blond and slightly scruffy heartthrob, was touring the north on a motorcycle while a camera crew documented his journey for a show promoting health awareness. He said the Quebrada de Humahuaca’s silent beauty captivated him during his first trip to Jujuy a decade ago.

Back then, travelers were in for a rustic journey, with few options for accommodations along the 10 small towns that flank the ravine.

Now, about a dozen boutique lodgings have opened in or near the 100-mile route, most of them decorated by the design firm Usos. Started in 2001 by the local architects Carlos Gronda and Arturo de Tezanos Pinto, Usos draws inspiration from the history, traditions and idiosyncrasies of the region to create folkloric-chic furniture, objects and installations.

At Huacalera, a roadside ranch in the heart of the Quebrada that was converted last year into a hotel and spa, Usos outfitted the lobby with three boldly colored round tables backed by a wall of round mirrors. The tables display a variety of evocative figurines: tiny llamas, potted miniature cactuses and an army of ekekos, good-luck amulets that look like toy representations of Clark Gable — if he wore traditional Andean costumes and colorful wool hats.

“We create objects with identity,” said Mr. Tezanos Pinto, looking dapper in a cashmere scarf and red sneakers. “Latin America has always looked to the outside; we are convinced that a lot can be achieved by looking at what’s here in the north of Argentina.”

Another Usos collaboration is Casa Colorada, a secluded retreat floating above the clouds on a 10,000-foot-high plateau surrounded by mountain peaks. The path that leads there — the Camino a la Garganta del Diablo, or the Road to the Devil’s Gorge — begins at Tilcara, a small town of adobe constructions with a bustling central plaza where Indian vendors sell their crafts by day and street musicians play their charangos (small guitars) by night.

Less than a mile into the journey, the road begins to live up to its name: this steep and curvy path along the edge of a cliff is not for the faint of heart. If a passenger finds the will to relax, the 40-minute ride is spectacular, passing through massive sandstone quarries, a reserve of giant cacti called cardones, ancient farming terraces and, finally, a sprawling stone-walled ranch with red roofs.

The living area of this 10-room estate, decorated with ample white sofas and throw pillows in purple shades — a palette often seen in Indian clothing — looks out into a serene horizon of pale green ranges. Guests can book treks or horseback rides of varying difficulty, some along steep mountain trails, and others along streams and fields where pumas, condors and vicuñas can be spotted. Meals are prepared by a staff of local cooks who might serve a starter of tamales and an entree of Andean fingerling potatoes, broad beans and rolled chicken breast with mushrooms.

Jujuy’s cuisine, like the rest of its traditions, is a convergence of colonial and pre-Hispanic influences. Some of the region’s fare, like tamales and grilled llama, is common in several Latin American countries. Others, like locro, a rich corn-and-meat stew, are specifically associated with northwest Argentina.

Restaurants are beginning to offer upscale versions of these staples. El Nuevo Progreso in Tilcara, a bohemian spot run by a Buenos Aires transplant, has llama carpaccio with arugula, and beer-braised lamb with chestnut-and-potatoes mash. Diners linger here sipping regional red wine, surrounded by the owner’s own abstract paintings, listening to jazz CDs or live folkloric music.

While Tilcara has several dining options and services, Purmamarca has the most charm among the Quebrada’s towns. It is tiny — just a few blocks of adobe houses, rustic bars and shops selling everything from silver jewelry and alpaca sweaters to dolls and medicinal herbs — but framed by the greatness of the Cerro de los Siete Colores, or the Hill of the Seven Colors, which is a towering rainbow of green, yellow, purple and ocher rock formations.

From this hill stems the Camino de los Colorados, a gravel path along two miles of geologic wonders: red flat-topped mountains, green conical mountains, uneven purple ridges. Farther west, some 40 miles from Purmamarca, is the Salinas Grandes salt desert, an otherworldly expanse of white flatlands that becomes turquoise when it rains.

Surely this haunting scenery inspired many of the local legends, including tales of goblin spirits that live alone in the puna, the Altiplano, and enjoy tormenting rural travelers. Peasants say these lonesome goblins can sometimes be heard singing sad songs amid the hills.

Like the ekeko, the Clark Gable-faced amulet dressed in a bright poncho, standing agape and with open arms waiting for good fortune to arrive, Jujuy may be ready for a new future, but never at the expense of its quirky style.

“Jujuy has a unique essence,” Mr. Tezanos Pintos said. “We have our own stamp.”

GETTING THERE

Aerolíneas Argentinas has daily direct flights from Buenos Aires to San Salvador de Jujuy, the provincial capital. A recent Web search found flights starting at $400. Another option is to fly from Buenos Aires into nearby Salta (LAN Airlines has daily flights) and drive 60 miles north to Jujuy.

Jujuy’s Quebrada de Humahuaca has temperate days and cool nights year-round, with considerably warmer weather from December through March. Carnaval in February, Holy Week in March and Pachamama in August are the most important celebrations.
