Moving to San Francisco, any advice

Im moving to San Francisco from the suburbs of Virginia, ive never moved anywhere and am preparing for a rude awakening but am really excited. Im coming for a month to look for a job and an apartment. Anyone know anywhere cheap and still relatively safe. I dont mind living in a crummy apartment as long as its safe for me walking in and out alone. Im looking maybe around the mission, or SOMA but im clueless and any extra advice would help. Feel free to email me if your really familiar, or just know of any cool bars or restaurants to check out on a budget. —- AWarren87@live.com

The Mission District and SOMA are certainly not suburban.

—–

SOMA used to be full of abandoned warehouses and urban blight. But since the early 1990s, it has become one massive construction zone. The San Francisco branch of MOMA came first. Then the new baseball stadium. Nowadays, many condominiums are going up. And if all goes according to plan, the 1,200 ft. Transbay Center Tower – the West Coast’s tallest building – will be completed by 2013. Al Gore has a penthouse apartment here (one of his many residences around the country).

Despite all of this gentrification, however, SOMA still has some of the best nightclubs in San Francisco (Folsom 1015, DNA Lounge, Mezzanine, Six, Supperclub, EndUp, Temple). And it isn’t all sterilized for your protection yet. Much to the annoyance of City Hall, the 6th Street corridor has stubbornly refused to give up its “skid row” status. And the areas closer to the freeway are still seedy.

I actually think it is a great neighborhood. It has just enough “gritty” pockets to be interesting. But it also has a very wealthy class of folks in those new condos. So, it isn’t particularly dangerous.

The Mission District is the Latino quarter of San Francisco. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city (the original 1776 church still stands). And it has maintained its lively Spanish heritage for more than two centuries now. The Mission is always, always noisy. While light sleepers might have some trouble in SOMA, they would definitely have trouble in the Mission. So, that’s one problem.

It is also a relatively poor area. There are a lot of Mexican immigrants. Legal and otherwise. And sadly, there’s also a great deal of gang activity. It is generally fine during the day. But at night, you don’t want to wander off. This is especially true around 24th Street (including the subway station).

If you’re not street savvy, I can’t recommend the Mission. It is a fascinating neighborhood to visit during the day, with lots of thrift shops and cheap food. But it simply isn’t safe for newcomers to urban life.

What are some ways to have fun at the residence of Algonquin?

My school took a trip to Ottawa, and will spend 4 days in the residence Algonquin College from May 20-24. I wondered what the parties and if there just happens nightclubs and right next to other forms of entertainment.

No clubs good neighbors. Located in Ottawa, the city Forgot fun. Algonquin College is located far enough from the Byward Market, or Hull in the band … about the only places where the nightlife happens. You have to drive, take a taxi or a bus to one of these places. The residence is what you expect from a building filled with many young people. Because it is the weekend May 24, many people will be out of town, so the nightlife is probably less than usual. Without But there will be fireworks for the festival.

Travel to Washington, DC?

I am traveling to DC at the end of July with my husband. We are both in our early 30′s. We wish to see the typical tourist attractions of DC during the day, but also desire to have something fun to do at night besides sit in the hotel (bars, restaurants, etc., not night clubs). I am wondering the best area of DC to stay to fulfill these requests? I do not mind taking cheap transportation during the day (metro?) but would prefer to be close by things to do at night so we can safely walk to and from these activities. Downtown? Capital area? Georgetown/Foggy Bottom? Dupont Circle? Please advise-I can find deals in all these areas but don’t know which one to choose. Thanks!

I lived in DC for about 50 years until a few years ago. While I have a long history with the city, things do change. But from what I remember the place that you want to stay in or near is Georgetown. You can do that by staying in DC or on the Virginia side of the river maybe one or two metro stops away. Georgetown will likely have the bars and restaurants you are looking for. My next recommendation would be downtown, like maybe the Marriott at 14th St and Penn Ave. You could walk to restaurants and the museums from there. The Capitol area has some bars and restaurants but its mainly a day time area. As I recall Dupont Circle is where the gay community hangs out.

The basics of your kitchen remodeling Minneapolis

The history of the kitchen is actually a story. In ancient Greece, only the rich could afford afford to have in their kitchens and homes during the Roman Empire, the residents will not cook in their own way they had to do their cooking in large public kitchens with stoves bronze. In the Middle Ages in Japan, early in their stoves were made of plaster and clay.

Today, the kitchens of all shapes and sizes. People has come a long way since the days of cooking over an open fire in the high-tech features available today. It has grown from a simple place cooking is the heart of any home. If you like the kitchen, but hopes it can be improved, then perhaps it's time for some renovations.

It is crucial to identify the different focal points in your kitchen if you want to make it shine. Be creative and have fun mixing things up. If you like to entertain your guests, have a bar or wine coolers, even in the kitchen. Heck, why not put the kitchen next to the dining room, as does cook up a storm, you still able to laugh to share with your friends. Have fun, the possibilities are endless.

If you want a convenient and efficient kitchen, it is important to note that a good kitchen has all at your fingertips. A Minneapolis redo the recommendation is to keep the kitchen the distance between the kitchen triangle 12-23 feet, no traffic will pass through this important area. Points of a triangle kitchen sink, refrigerator and stove.

Another Minneapolis recommendation to redo the kitchen and dining room to combat space is that each meal should be a 12 "x 24", with a distance of 24 "-36" the high barriers. In addition, because the sink is one of the most used in the kitchen, the ideal location because it lies between two devices.

Another remake the kitchen in Minneapolis recommendation is to use the drawers and cupboards withdrawal swing out instead of coming in the models for easy storage and convenience. The oven microwave must be between the counter and at eye level. For the sake of common sense, put a fire extinguisher and a smoke detector near the cooking area to prevent fires for mistakes in the kitchen.

is there any body who knows of a local henderson / Las Vegas Business that could powder coat my bmx frame etc.?

I want to powder coat my frame flat black, my handle bars flat white, along with my fork, front and back rim as well. what is the price range that im looking at?? how long will it take?? Thanks

Several choices:

http://www.powdercoatinglv.com/miscgallery.html

Cost depends on a number of variables. You don’t say what the materials are. All aluminum? Do you need it blasted first? Flat black works very well. I wouldn’t spend over $200 for what you want, at the outside. I’ve had one done here (frame only) for under $100, including blasting.

Most powder coaters in my area (Atlanta) run batches and will give you a price break when they are running, for example, a lot of flat black. If you’re not waiting for a deal like this then expect a 2 to 4 day turnaround.

Look at the sites above and call and ask them what they would charge for a bike frame, etc.

Driven crazy trying to find an Irish hard rock song… HELP! Please?

It is not “I am shipping up to Boston”, “Johnny I never knew ya”, “Johnny jump up”, or “whiskey in a jar”… all I know is that it talks about meeting in a bar, starts out with more Irish acoustics, the lines I do remember could b wrong but are “oh ( insert name that sounds like Johnny) won’t ya go…” and after a heavy guitar strike “there is something wrong with anyone/ everyone who is not free/ like me”… I am going crazy here and am on the verge of angry tears… I feel like I imagined it but I have heard it three times on my local radio station that failed to mention the name of the artist or song three times :(

That’s the Sad Ballad of Danny Boy by Floater.

“Oh, Danny, won’t you go home earlier tonight, your daughter doesn’t knwo you and you’re giving us a fright when you say… say something’s wrong with anyone who’s not like me”

*EDIT*
It’s the song that got me into Floater, I love them, they’re from Portland, Oregon.

Jacksonville Vacation….Advice?

I am going to Jacksonville for vacation and to visit an old friend. I have made reservations in “downtown” and “Neptune Beach” . I need to decide which one to stick with…..advice? We are more interested in a great nightlife…not really the beach. Bar suggestions would be really helpful!

Go to Jacksoville Landing. Great nightlife, lotsa bars, all walking ! The Beaches are ok area, but if you are looking to party-stay near the landing. You may want to double check what part of “downtown” you are talking about. It can mean several different areas, with different things. Some are kind of sketchy.
